Bear Mountain Premium Plus Wood Fuel Pellets contain significantly less moisture than the industry standard resulting in heating your home faster and hotter. We take the time to dry our pellets like no one else which means you get more fuel in every bag and you use less of that fuel to burn away excess moisture. Instead you use the fuel you purchased to heat your home, not dry your pellets.
Bear Mountain Premium Plus Wood Fuel Pellets are made exclusively from Douglas Fir with a hint of Western Red Cedar. We tightly pack our pellets only with these high-energy species, which gives you more heat. Review the full description below for more details on how the low moisture content and species of wood will give you the best pellet for heating your home with minimal cleanup. At the same time, heating with wood pellets will keep your carbon footprint as small as possible, which means great things for our environment.
Moisture Content: | 2.136% |
Ash Content: | 0.15% |
Heating Value – As Received: | 8527 Btu/lb |
Heating Value – Moisture Free: | 8713 Btu/lb |
Bear Mountain is same as our Goldenfire brand except we can mix up to 5% Western Red Cedar with the Douglas fir. We cannot detect a difference in testing other than a very slight increase in ash and an equally slight increase in heating value.
We are willing to go head to head with any pellet produced using independent lab tests or stove tests.
Review of Bear Mountain Wood Pellets
Oct 2014: Bear Mountain wood pellets are one of the best. Good old Douglas Fir pellets. These pellets put out fantastic heat and very little ash. Hands down a great choice for heating your house all year long. I’m sure that these have a very strong brand loyalty with it’s burners.
Nov:2017 – So these pellets are awesome! done! but…………… they are not like the ones they sent me a few years past. I’m not sure if the reason is because Lignetics bought them out but…. Anyway, these are a west coast doug fir pellet and are great! low ash and high heat! I hope they keep up the great quality they had before because the bag I received are not like they used to be.
August 3 2018 – Really looking forward to getting these in the mail this year! Awesome Pellet

Bear Mountain Quality Is Down
Been burning Bear Mountain for years and have been real happy until lately. Last year, 2018, the pleasant cedar scent of the pellets disappeared and while the pellets seemed to burn OK, there was more ash of a different color. This year, 2019, pellets are darker color, softer and completely plug my burn pot overnight with a hard, carbon like deposit that must be chipped off the sides of burn pot with a sharp pick.
Never seen anything like this before. Next time I’ll try another brand.

Pellets too long for pellet stove.
Pellets are too long for stove. I was fighting auger jams last winter. I tried adjusting the feed gate down and up, no difference. Each time I would clean the hopper and chute of any dust. The problem would return right away.
What I finally confirmed today is that the pellets, some well over 1″ long, are jamming in the feed chute on their way from the auger tube to the fire pot. It had struck me earlier that these pellets seem oddly long. Much longer than any I’ve used before. I now know for a fact that these long pellets are the cause of all the issues I’ve had with this stove over the past year.
I will take a sample of these pellets to show the manager of the feed store where I buy pellets and caution them of the likelihood of trouble when using these pellets. Until I can be assured that this defect in manufacture has been adressed, no more Bear Mountain pellets for my stove.

Bear Mountain sawdust pellets
bear mountain chooses not to re-screen or discard bottom of hoppers (monetary motivated I am sure) as I have encountered again numerous bags of pellets containing approx 20-25% sawdust.
It is bad enough that you are paying for sawdust, but it will plug your system if you choose to use it as is. You can re-screen with your own system, but why would you have to go to this end when it should come from the factory ready to use.
I rarely use BEAR MOUNTAIN, (for good reason) but towards the end of the season they are one of a few brands still available (wonder why?)
I have not contacted bear mountain, nor will I, but you would think that they would audit their quality control program occasionally (maybe they do, but just don’t give a rip)
As for me, I will use them as a last resort

Quality has fallen off
Burned 4 tons last year with no complaints, this year I’ve noticed a huge difference in heat output and ash buildup. Was cleaning out ash once a week, now I’m every three days. Heat output is way down. Very disappointed.

Something has changed in quality
Been using Premium Plus for 7 years without any issues. This last batch ( 2 tons) of same pellets is much different then past. Does not burn hot and gives off twice as much ash as prior purchases. In the past I have never used heat setting above LOW but this year I have to use heat setting MEDIUM and the stove still has trouble maintaining heat level. Also seems like a lesser brand product, enough so that I just might change brands. No reason to pay $5 a bag when other brands will burn just the same as half the cost. I called the company and they are sending me voucher for a few more bags to see if the trouble is with the one pallet I received.

Not Sure About Bear Mountain Anymore.
I’m not sure about Bear Mountain anymore, they used to be hotter at lower settings on my stove. But you look at the website and the bag, it says 100% wood. No where does it say that they are still made with Douglas Fir (8556 to 9200 BTU) and Western Cedar (9026 to 9700 BTU). The old website states, “Bear Mountain Premium Plus Wood Fuel Pellets are made exclusively from Douglas Fir with a hint of Western Red Cedar”, probably Lignetics trying to make a cheaper product. I get a build up in the burn pot that I didn’t get before, and to me it even smells differently. Now the website says that Golden Fire has a higher BTU, that was not the case before, Bear Mountain was always hotter. I’m disappointed in this new “Lignetics” product. The bag maybe still familiar, but the product isn’t.

I have an Austroflamm stove and have been using Bear Mountain pellets for years. They’ve been great until this year. I usually can run for 5 days without having to clean. But this year I have to clean every two days. I don’t know what the difference is, but I bought 3 tons and guess I’m stuck for this year.
