Our primary source of heat was a woodstove for decades. Our electric heat would certainly heat the house but the cost not only fluctuates but is generally fairly high. A year ago we purchased a Harman Absolute 63 pellet stove. I like to tell our dealer/installer/service folks, Superior Fireplace and Hottubs, Prince Frederick, Maryland, that I thought I was making a home improvement but in reality I was making a life improvement. I keep my stove clean and burn premium grade pellets and our house is very comfortable and the stove has been trouble free. I shop for pellets in the off season and you can find them at discounted prices. I will admit to my insecurity of being reliant on electricity but I was able to find a backup power supply that will run the stove about eight hours with no action required from me. I will also admit that I miss cooking on top of the woodstove as well. What I don’t miss is going outside in the middle of the night in the cold, rain, snow, or whatever Mother Nature is offering up, at the time, to feed the woodstove. Another option that Harman offers is a remote temperature sensor. Our stove is in the “mud room” so I place the remote sensor in the living room and it maintains the temperature that I have selected. So,. my experience is the pellet stove is convenient, .economical, and environmentally friendly……..I don’t…… sells itself!
We have had our Whitfield Pellet Stove since 1993. We have replaced one glass panel, one auger, the rope gasket and the electric control panel. There is never a problem in the off season. Parts are always expensive but seem to be available. The pellet stove is our only source of heat by choice. We burn on average 3 tons of pellets a year during the cold weather season. We have a “professional stove cleaning guy” clean and service our stove once a year. The High Quality of Pellets is Key to a good operating stove. One does not save any money buying Cheap pellets in the long run and finding quality pellets is a challenge at times. Now that we are “older” lifting 40 pound sacks of pellets is more difficult. We have the local lumber yard deliver a Ton of pellets on a pallet all wrapped in plastic we have set in our back yard still the bringing into the house is a pain. The beautiful flame, the Super Heating has made having a pellet stove all worth while. Our Pellet Stove has done us well over the past 26 years. Knowing what we know now there is no such thing as a Cost Savings heat source, how-ever you heat your home count on spending $1,000 a year…
