Summary
August 2019 – Amaizing new plant up the road.
Tony who is the “maine” man up at the brand new Wood & Sons pellet mill in Stanford ME, called me up and invited me up to take a tour of this brand new state of the art mill. I’m super impressed with the first few weeks of pellets. They are burning super hot and almost no ash. Look out VT wood pellets! Once Tony get’s these dialed in they will be hitting the market and you will need to keep your eyes out for these 100% Eastern White Pine softwood pellets for sure.

Great performance-to-value point go to's
After trying a few of every type of premium pellet our supplier had – Vermont Wood, La Crete, Okanagan, Wood & Sons, and so forth we settled on these as a good starting point in two used Harmans we bought just this season. We live in the mountains and use them as our primary heat source, both running 24/7 from late October to early April, and are about 2 tons into a roughly 4 ton season, which puts them solidly in the middle for BTU/pound. We definitely get great BTU/dollar out of these from our supplier at $295/ton. The bags are sturdy, there’s been no water damage. In 2 tons we had 2 damaged bags, losing no more than 5 lbs each in pellets and the remainder of the damaged bags burned perfectly fine despite slightly more air and moisture exposure. These pellets are small, as people have pointed out, but we haven’t had issues with the hopper not feeding on either the XXV or the Accentra. In fact it is nice not to wake up to the wood stove chomping through a bag of overly long pellets. They are dusty and throw a lot of embers – however our glass stays noticeably clean up to quarter of a ton. We feel safe cleaning the stove every half ton with these. Our ash bucket could probably hold a full four tons worth or more, they produce little ash comparatively. We haven’t had to feed higher than 3 to keep up with temps as low as -10, where other brands normally push us to 4 or more, and 2.5 is our new normal. As our first two ton shipment dries up we are ordering these for the rest of the winter. Great pellets.

Wood and Sons pellets
Bought 6 tons in September 2019. first ton was alright. After starting 2nd ton noticed a lot of sawdust in the bag. After about 10 bags into 2nd ton bags seem to be having a lot more sawdust in them. My pellet stove stopped working in the middle of the night. It ran out of pellets. There was so much sawdust mixed in with the pellets they would not slide down the sides of the pellet hopper, so the stove ran out of pellets. I fought with this for a couple of weeks. I have 2 Harman pellet stoves which will burn about anything. I have burnt pellets fro 15 years, 6tons per year. I have tried several different brands but have never had anything like these pellets. I sifted out the sawdust out of one bag and got about on gallon of sawdust. I have got about 1 1/2 tons of these left with the sawdust in them. I got a hold of Tony at Wood and sons. He was sympathetic but didn’t offer much help. I have to sift the rest of them before I can use them in my stove or else it will shut down in the middle of the night. I would not recommend these to anyone. I bought 2 different batches of these pellets at 3 tons per load. The first 3 tons seen alright but I am worried they are falling apart also . I sifted on bag from the first 3 tons and got 2 cups of sawdust and very fine pieces of pellets. I am worried about the rest of the winter.

Woods and son's
Bought 3 tons beginning of this season, was going to buy three more. But not happy, burned about ton and half so far. Stove shuts down with half a bag left in the hopper, because of bridging. The pellets are very small and most are broken pieces, the burn pot has to be cleaned more often, because of carbon buildup. Clean glass gets black buildup around edges in less than 24 hours. My stove and flue was cleaned before the start of the season, and broken down and cleaned every 20 bags burned. They need to do something about the broken pieces, and increase the size. I have one ton left and going try to sell them and maybe go to Vermont wood pellets.

Mr.
Used your pellets last three years. This year they are very consistent in size, and that’s a good thing. However, I have noticed the they are making huge linkers! Almost three inches by three inches and one inch thick. What’s going on?

Very clean burning but maybe they are to small
My window is barely dirty after a half ton. Burns hot and i don’t see a lot of ash. At least 4 times the pellet stove almost stopped burning because pellets did not fall correctly from hopper to burn pot. i basically had a square tunnel to burner in hopper with pellets all around the sides. standard 50 lb hopper

Very Disappointed
First time I used Wood and Son! Great heat, Low ash, but 8 bags into the first ton my stove hopper got gummy. ( Harman Eccentra Insert). Because of this problem pellets wont slide down hopper and stove shuts down. I had same problem with another brand last year, so switched to hard wood and no problems. Purchased 4 tons for the season, so I am either stuck, or I’ll look for someone to purchase my Wood and Son pellets and find some hardwood pellets for the reminder of the season. Until Wood and Son solves problem I won’t buy again

Best pellets I have used!
It is nice to get a locally made, quality product. Low ash, zero clinker.

Local customer….Just to let you know, I visited them a few weeks ago and they are now dialing everything in. Brand new mill and I got a few bags exactly like you got off of their first run… They are going to be dialed in soon and be superior… I will let you know right when they are perfect.
Disappointed
Purchased a ton of the Wood & Sons Pellets because they are a local company and wanted to give some support to a locally owned business. The pellets were less expensive than the Canadian one we had been buying. Sorry to say I am disappointed in the quality. The pellets are broken up and smaller, bags have a lot of fines. The stove is not burning as clean and the pellets are creating quite a bit more ash. Unless I hear of improvements I will be going back to the Canadian pellets.

Wood and Sons, 100% Eastern White Pine---So Far, So Good
I wound up with 2 tons of these from my local supplier in NH, since they ran out of Energex Softwood blend that I usually use. I’d never heard of them before but I liked that they were locally made (in Maine), and I trusted the recommendation of my supplier. I have an Avalon Astoria that came with my new house and got a full complete cleaning and all new gaskets before I fired it up. So far I’ve burned Green Supreme (terrible), Still River (not great), Hardwood Blend from Tractor Supply which is re-branded Maine Woods (good heat, but ashy), and a few bags of Minute Man Douglas Fir Supreme (amazing but expensive). I’ve burned about 15 bags so far, and here’s my take on Wood and Sons:
Pros:
-Hot, long burning flame. The bag states 8700 BTU, and they’re darn close to the Douglas Fir pellets in keeping the house nice and toasty
-Low dust/fines
-Clean. Once I got the air trim dialed in, my glass has stayed clear and I haven’t had clinkers
-Low ash. I do a quick cleaning of the combustion chamber about every 5 bags, but honestly I could go longer, I just don’t.
-Good bag quality. Broke down and re-stacked 2 pallets with no breaks and no loose pellets.
Cons:
-The granular pieces are very small, with many being broken to the point where there isn’t a fully formed pellet, more of just a chip. They burn ok, but I see more still burning pieces fly from the burnpot than with other brands. Not sure if this is because the pieces are too small/light, or if the additional burn air needed to blow through the dense pile created by small pieces is blowing them out, or a little of both. Small complaint, but that’s that.
-I notice more sparks/fly ash coming from the outside vent than with other brands. Doesn’t bother me much, but could be a concern for folks who are vented over shrubs or dry grass.
-No PFI certification seal. This is without a doubt a premium pellet, and I’m assuming because they’re a brand new mill that they’re still waiting on certification. My stove is well beyond warranty so no issue here, but folks with new stoves that require PFI cert for warranty coverage may want to hold off until everything is official.
Conclusion:
Wood and Sons 100% Eastern White Pine is a solid, clean, hot-burning pellet. If the prices remain the same for next season, I will likely buy them again.
