We are on our 13th year of heat for our acreage and buildings. There have been learning curves but it has been good. We have a house 1780 ft.² and same as basement, garage kept at 45°F, 2400 square-foot shop 16 foot walls at 50°F and heat domestic water. We can have winters at -30F to -40F for a couple of weeks and the boiler works good. It seems to run better when it has to run hard to keep up with the heat to the buildings. We mix 80 to 90% grain and the rest would pellets which seems to work the best for us especially at low or idle time.
During cold time which the boiler can be on from mid September to mid April we will burn about 650 bushels of grain/wood pellets.

I have a Maxim M 250 boiler and this is my 13th season in use. I have had learning curves but have figured lots out. I burn a combination of 80-90% grain and the rest wood pellet mixture. This seems to work the best for me. The winters can get cold here (40f below and winds) but with a maintained unit it can handle it. I heat a 1780 sq ft house and same on the basement, domestic water,780 sq ft garage at 45 degrees Fahrenheit , and a 2400 sq ft shop with 16’ high walls at 55 degrees Fahrenheit and I could even go warmer in the shop. To heat everything we burn about 650 bushels of fuel. I get my grain for trucking only so it makes it very cheap otherwise it can be expensive. This mixture works good especially burning on low or idle for there is very little to no creosote buildup. Downfall is it wears on the aerator.
