Summary
August 2019 – Amaizing new plant up the road.
Tony who is the “maine” man up at the brand new Wood & Sons pellet mill in Stanford ME, called me up and invited me up to take a tour of this brand new state of the art mill. I’m super impressed with the first few weeks of pellets. They are burning super hot and almost no ash. Look out VT wood pellets! Once Tony get’s these dialed in they will be hitting the market and you will need to keep your eyes out for these 100% Eastern White Pine softwood pellets for sure.

Pellets have issues feeding
I bought one ton of these for my new Harman Accentra 52i. I’m a new pellet burner, but they seem to burn well/hot enough and make an acceptable amount of ash. However beware that you will need to be constantly tending to the hopper with this stove and pellet combination. The pellets constantly funnel through and I wake up to a stove that has shut itself off when there’s still 15-20 lbs in the hopper. Not sure if it’s the high amount of fines or something to do with the resin in softwoods. I tried several bags of New England (Lignetics) hardwoods and Green Supreme (Lignetics) hardwoods and they didn’t do this.
The price was right… but I am glad I only got a ton because I’m growing tired of constantly reaching in the upper to brush pellets down the sides of the hopper. I’ll try something else next time.

Stay away
Burned through 1.5 tons and was very happy. So we bought 5 tons for the following season, and what a mistake! I was fed up with them not feeding through the hopper and repeatedly waking up to the stove off and the center of my hopper funneled through. I gave 1.5 tons away and Bought other stuff to finish the season. I’ll never buy them again.
I saw a post last week from another guy experiencing the same thing. So seems they haven’t corrected their issues that they claimed was a temporary thing.

Not hot
I’ve burned these alot over the past year. They are not hot. I have to turn up the feed rate considerably to get any kind of heat output. Now, that being said, they are a really affordable pellet and super low ash content! They are good for when the temps are in the 40’s. Lower than that you want a high BTU pellet. They claim 8800 BTU’s. No way, not even with the feed rate at 9. More like 8000-8100. I’ve used Green Supreme in comparison at the same feed rate and Green Supreme is much hotter.

Great Pellets
I’ve been burning these pellets for 3 years now. When I first installed my Harman Accentra52i, I bought a ton of these (based on my supplier) along with 2 tons of Barefoot (recommended by stove installer). The Wood& Sons burned hotter with less ash than Barefoot. I didn’t experience any sticking/clogging in the hopper that some others have mentioned. I didn’t notice if the creosote on the glass was significantly different than the others I’ve tried. To me, they all seem to be about the same amount of creosote build-up in the same time frame. I am more concerned with the heat output, amount of ash and pellet feeding issues than aesthetics. I empty the ash pan weekly – usually about 1/4 full and do a thorough cleaning monthly. These are my go-to pellets, I do buy one ton of another brand just to try other options out there.
