Purcell Premium Wood Pellets

100% Softwood (Douglas Fir) – Premium High-Heat Fuel

Purcell Premium Wood Pellets are manufactured from Pacific Northwest Douglas Fir sawdust with no fillers, additives or bark, offering a dense, high-energy fuel for home pellet stoves. The low moisture content and softwood-only composition help deliver strong heat output and reduced ash.

Typical specs: Heating values around 8,400–8,700 BTUs per pound are reported and ash content often well below 0.5%. The product is bagged in 40-lb units and marketed to pellet-stove users who want high performance from softwood fuel.

Availability: Purcell pellets are distributed through regional dealers and select hardware/farm-supply stores in the U.S., particularly in areas served by western and northern softwood mills. Because premium softwood fuels are more niche, check bag date, storage condition and production batch before buying by the ton.

Status note: The brand remains active and listed in current retail-online inventories. That said, user forums highlight that batch variation and case-to-case performance can differ, so testing a small quantity early in the season is wise.

Bottom line: If your pellet stove runs best on a softwood pellet and you’re looking for clean, high-heat performance with minimal ash, Purcell Premium Wood Pellets are a solid choice—just confirm you’re getting a fresh-season bag from a reliable supplier.

      1. Did not live up to advertised characteristics

        (1)

This is the first year I’ve used Purcell Premium Pellets; previous 7 years I primarily used Olympus. I have a Quadrafire Santa Fe stove that I use as the primary heat source for my house. I typically go through around 1.5 tons a year.
Compared to Olympus the Purcell pellets generate significantly more ash, to the point where I need to clean the stove firebox twice weekly as compared to weekly or longer with Olympus. In 2 instances I discovered that the ash/clinkers formed a cake around the perimeter of the interior surface of the firepot to the extent that airflow was restricted and the stove started “chuffing”.
My final comment is that I’ve gone through noticeably more of bags of pellets this year, a relatively mild year, than in the past and will have to buy a dozen or so extra bags of pellets to get through the season. They will not be Purcell ! I’m not impressed

      2. Not Impressed

This is the first year we have used Purcell Pellets and are not impressed. They taut low ash, but the ash is the worst we have seen. The pellets don’t heat as hot as others we have purchased before. We will not be purchasing Purcell again.

      4. Purcell pellets jam in my stove

        (1)

I ran a ton of the Purcell pellets last year through my Harman Advance stove. They worked fine. This year I bought two tons. The very first bag of the new pellets jammed my stove whereupon the stove shut down with an error light flashing. It seems Purcell had a broken machine aroind the date code of 01419 resulting in way too long pellets. Some are over two inches long! They jam out in the feeder chute. The stove will not run for more than 15 minutes before it shuts down. I have to pour the pellets onto a tray and break them up. But they still do not feed correctly. They seem to have a slight stickiness to them. They just do not tumble down easily. It’s like they are stuck together. lignetics pellets work great. They easily tumble down. The Purcell pellets clump together and jam up. Yes I cleaned the stove several times. I contacted Purcell and they just said oh well, we did have a problem back then. I will never buy them again.
